Isengard Uruk-Hai Scout Command

With the Causeway piece completed, I'll be turning my terrain building activity back to Balin's Tomb, I think... but looking forward again, to model requirements for the ongoing Fellowship Campaign and on to the Two Towers I have recently completed more Uruk-Hai scouts and command figures to lead them...

These figures will be required for the Amon Hen scenario, and on through the Isengard versus Rohan scenarios of the Two Towers, where they will feature in the Battles of the Fords of Isen, the Burning of the WestFold and of course Helms Deep...

All metal figures this time... but they will compliment the plastic set of Uruk-Hai scouts I completed a couple of months back now...

Scout banner above and drummer below... these came out as a twin pack some time ago, probably as part of the required releases for the WOTR game. The banner I can certainly use but the drummer no longer has specific stats in the current SBG game.

There is an orc drummer in the Mordor list, who is a character hero so perhaps I could borrow his stats and abilities as an 'ally' and proxy this figure into the force that way? Would need a bit of a houserule players agreement to pull off... otherwise it can simply be a regular Uruk scout just to use the cool figure... love the thigh bone as a drum stick!

Next up is Mauhur... Mauhur wasn't in the movies but does feature in the book, although more as reference by Ugluk, when he talks of other scout warbands in the area...

If you take Mauhur, you can upgrade your scouts to 'marauders', increasing their move from 6" to 8".

Mauhur

Another uruk leader is Vrasku, with his famed crossbow. Vrasku didnt make it into the monies but he is creditted in the books as being the one to shoot down Theodred at the First Battle of the Fords of Isen. He was later killed by Erkenbrand, at the Second battle at the Ford...

Vrasku
Lurtz, needs no introduction!A well know Uruk Leader from the movies, but not one from the book! Never the less he is a very useful commander of the Uruks, and is clearly required for the Amon Hen scenario!

Lurtz
More metal Uruks with shields, to bolster the numbers of troops I need at Amon Hen...

Mordor Uruk-Hai

I love fielding loads of orcs in my Mordor forces, that horde rabble look is certainly appealing and can at times also overwhelm an opponent... but your humble orc is not the best fighter Mordor can offer... enter stage right Mordor Uruk-Hai !

The Uruk-Hai were a much bigger and stronger orc that Sauron first created, I believe, but that Saruman also later bred in his fortress of Isengard...

In the movie, we see the Mordor Uruks at the Tower of Cirith Ungol, when Shagrat and Gorbag get into a fight over Frodo's mithril shirt... their squabble, rolls out across the fortress as the orcs of Gorbag fight the Uruk-Hai of Shagrat, effectively destroying each other and leaving the tower unguarded, for Sam to enter and rescue Frodo...

In the game the Mordor-Uruks have a better Fight skill than their orc cousins and are also stronger. But they are still lightly armoured so relatively easy to kill still.

There were only three models made, that I have come across, two Uruks with sword and one with a two-handed mace.

To beef up their defence a bit I have added shields to the sword armed Uruks. A couple of these were spares from my box of Morannon orcs. Two more I made from Instant Mold Milliput casts of the same batch of  Morannon shields...

So the idea was to have a warband with six of these strong orcs, backed up by six spear wielding regular orcs, most likely led by Shagrat - War chief of Cirith Ungol. A supporting warband with a banner led by an orc shaman would also be a useful accompaniment.

These troops were due to get their first blooding tonight at KWC against Andrews forces of Dol Amroth, but Andrew is recovering from a bout of 'Sauron's Revenge' aka 'Montezuma's revenge'... so we'll delay their debut until next week.

Uruk Hai Scouts

In between covering myself in PVA glue and polyfilla, I have managed to pick the paintbrush up from time to time too... and before my blog posts become a little boring, with repeated pictures of a certain white rocky staircase... I thought I'd put up some pics of models I finished recently...

Uruk Hai Scouts...

This is one box of 24 (that's the old size boxes)... done. I'll be needing these troops as part of my ongoing Journey-book campaign - they'll get an outing first at Amon Hen, where they break up the Fellowship, and then will see ongoing use through the events of the Two Towers... raiding the Westfold, the battles at the Fords of Isen and on to Helms Deep...

In the movie, these troops look virtually black, but I wanted at least a little colour to them, so after usual black undercoat, I used a dark pallette; using GW Bestial brown for the Uruk skin, and then Foundry 34B, 6A, 31A and GW Rhinox Hide for the various clothing, leather armour effects, rotated around through the various models. The metal armour got the usual Tin Bitz followed by BoltGun drybrush (or Gun metal). Exposed hair was drybrushed Foundry 34B. The whole model then washed in black wash, then the small edge highlights picked out again with the base colour, on the clothing and leather armour, and skin. Facial detail was picked out on those without helmets, and some white-hand marks painted on the exposed faces...

Then, since they're just plastic figures, and not so likely to chip as metal ones are, I didn't bother with the polyurethane gloss varnish, but just went straight to Vallejo matt acrylic brush on varnish. Then based as usual. Thinned PVA on the base, sprinkled on fine beach sand, washed in Vallejo Sepia wash. Dry brushed with Vermin Fur and then 'cream' and finally spots of static grass PVA'ed on.

Job done...

I rather like them, and think they'll make versatile skirmish scouting troops for various scenarios without being the 'tanks' that the main uruk soldiery can be - might give some of my Riders of Rohan a fighting chance then!

I've also got Lurtz lined up to paint, as well as Mauhur, and an Uruk scout command set of banner and drummer. Plus half dozen or so old metal uruk scouts to add to this force... and the scenario scout models carrying Pippin and Merry...

I've got another couple of boxes of plastic scouts too in case I need them. Originally bought for WOTR scale games, not sure I will need them now in the SBG setting, as WOTR seems to have gone phutt! We'll see...

Grrrr "Find the Halflings! Find the Halflings!"...

"They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard!" ... ;-)

Build me an army worthy of Mordor...

"Build me an army worthy of Mordor!" commanded Sauron, and the traitor Saruman does just this. Working from a stock of goblins and orcs he breeds a larger, fiercer orc warrior, able to tolerate daylight and travel great distances at need, and still fight. Thus Uruk-Hai of Isengard have come to Middle-Earth, to destroy the race of men.

Saruman the White, also known as Curunir to the elves. Once the greatest of the Istari; Maiar sent down by the Valar in the guise of old men, as wizards, to help the fair races of Middle-Earth in their ongoing battle with Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor. Saruman, over many years, centuries indeed, comes to feel the battle against Sauron, cannot be won, and thus over time, and also through using the Palantir of Orthanc, he is seduced into joining forces with Sauron.

Saruman and Grima Wormtongue inspect their troops, with encouragment from an Uruk-Hai shaman.

The Fighting Uruk-Hai, clad in heavy harness of war and wielding long pikes. Although Tolkien never specifically mentions pikes in his descriptions of the Uruk-Hai, Peter Jackson and and his team, came up with the idea, as it seemed logical based on their immediate foes; The Rohirrim, a mainly mounted force of cavalry. History tells us that the horse was countered with the pike, and thus pikes would be the ideal weapons to defeat Rohan in open battle.

However, the forces of Rohan retreat from this threat to the fortress of Helms Deep. Here normal soldiery wielding swords and shields, will contribute ably to the fight. PJ's designers also hypothesized that a long pike might also be useful in such a siege, being able to "hook" the defenders from the walls, and allow a ladder assault to be easier for the Uruks. I know of no historical precedent for this, but it makes for great theatre...

Regular orcs of Isengard also pour forth from the pits below Orthanc, and swell the ranks. Here led by a captain, drummer, taskmaster with whip and banner bearing the White-Hand of Saruman.
To help scale the walls of Helms Deep, an Uruk-Hai siege assault ballista, hurls its huge missiles to erect tall scaling ladders against the Hornburg. Again more ideas from PJ, but it makes for great drama during the siege.

Warg riders, lend speed and mobility to the attack of Isengard, acting as forward scouts, and engaging the flanks of the enemy during the crossing of the Isen, and hastening the demise of the Westfold and retreat from the River Isen.

Wild Isengard berserkers lead the assault up the scaling ladders, to bring death and destruction with their huge and fearsome two-handed swords. Driven to a berserk rage, their helmets are first filled with the blood of their enemies before the helm is placed on their heads, dripping blood down their bodies and filling their nostrils with the scent of their enemies. Truly fearsome warriors.

A great troll of Isengard. This is again not in the explicit canon of Tolkien, nor is it one of PJ's inventions. It appears, from what I can tell, to have been driven by the desires of the gaming fraternity, who wanted a troll to add to Isengards forces. I believe Tolkien always wanted others to develop further his world of Middle-Earth and the creatures therein, and stories there-from. As such, I feel it is within the bounds of possibility, that Saruman could have bent the will of trolls, simple creatures at best, to his command. The voice of Saruman was all powerful...

I still have many more units to add to this force, including Uruk-Hai scouts, crossbowmen, and Dunlendings.

I will hope to update this blog post in due course.
