The Hobbit - Goblin Town WIP - "The Capture" scenario terrain

I recently finished the rocky terrain layers, that will be used as a basis for Goblin Town, but they also are perfect for the preceeding scenario; "The Capture"

Above shows the 4' x 4' layout, with its 4 corner pieces, 4 mid side pieces, and 4 main central pieces, plus an assortment of rocky ourcrops.

Here below is the scenario from the The Hobbit rulebook....

... and a close up below of  the map for suggested terrain  layout....

The good thing about this terrain set up is its sufficiently 'generic' also for use in say, Shelobs Lair, Isengard, or any other evil themed desolate rocky areas...

After the crazy day that is Christmas with the kids, today, Boxing Day I managed to sneak off and spend some time to myself, while they played with their new prezzies, slicing balsa and gluing it together to make more platforms and levels for Goblin Town. Just need to get it all painted and laid out.

In the meantime now I've settled back into trimming some of the goblins from the set, with a glass of vino at my elbow.

Stay tuned for progress.

  1. That is really taking shape Scott, I love the little flight of steps at each end too. Trimming goblins withs a glass of vino at one's elbow sounds just about perfect to me!

    1. Thanks! Well spotted Michael, the top of the flight of stairs in bottom right corner is only just visible!
Not a bad way to spend the end of the evening! ;-)

  2. Sounds like you have a perfect plan there Scott. Me? I'm about to continue with my Chasseurs with a mug of Joe ;-)

  3. Good-looking terrain set-up, sir. I can see it being used for a number of "Colonial" scenarios as well . . . it doesn't have to remain only in the "Fantasy" realm.

    1. Hey Jeff, yes I guess any rocky mountain pass, or similar ... even a cave network... perhaps something akin to the island pirate cave where the Aztec gold was hidden in PotC #1... I can just see my pirates havig a merry scrap in there too!

    1. Thanks! I did! ;-) - a very nice Wolf Blass, Yellow Label, Merlot. Must admit I am not a 'wine snob' and will drink most any red wine wine, but I did enjoy this :-)

  6. Excellent! I really must try to get some scenery done this year. It would be brilliant for goblins v dwarves in Moria and Mount Doom last alliance v orcs too!

    1. Thanks! My thoughts exactly! Its also a motivation to get my LOTR dwarves painted up! Oh and the rest of my Moria forces; prowlers, Gundabads and another cave troll... and of course Groblog.

  7. Thanks all for the encouragement... I finished the main construction and base painting of all the wooden platforms and walkways etc. last night. I want to give them a light highlight drybrush just to give them that slightly weathered look... my only slight conundrum is whether to add 'railings' to the edges of the walkways... they clearly featured in the movie , but don't appear to be on the plastic goblin town components from the Hobbit set... plus if I add railing edges it limits the versatility of the layout... hmmm... They'd look cool but would affect playability...
